  Project Description:
  Provide a general description of the scope of the proposed project. A simple description is sufficient for minor projects. More detailed description, written in executive summary format, will be expected for major projects, and may include the following information as appropriate:
  • Description of the physical work to be accomplished.
  • The approximate square footage to be affected.
  • Any special equipment, which will be required to satisfy the identified need.
  • Other information as available or appropriate.
  • The status of planning, design and implementation (of earlier phases) of work on the project.
  • Please send an e-mail providing pictures, maps, or other documents that support the description of the project using the link at the end of this form.

  Project Justification:
  Summarize the need for the project and identify the purposes to be served.
This may be brief for minor projects, but should be detailed for major projects.
Information should include the following as appropriate:
  • Objectives to be achieved and benefits to be realized from the proposed project
  • How the project demonstrates responsiveness to UAF Strategic Plan 2005
  • How the project meets the goals and objectives of the MAU's academic/service plan
  • The extent to which the project maintains consistency with the approved capital program
  • How the project conforms and supports the Campus Master Plan
  • How the project demonstrates responsiveness to state, local or regional needs
  • The age, condition, and inadequacies of the existing facilities which hampers/prevents the fulfillment of programmatic and/or operational needs
  • Alternatives that have been considered for satisfying the identified need
  • Recommended standards for accommodating the program or activity that is not being satisfied by existing facilities
  • Consequences of not proceeding with the project
  • The impact on students, how many the project will ultimately serve, and to what extent the project will enhance the student educational experience
  • The impact on programs, which programs will be served (directly and indirectly) by this project and to what extent the project enhances the ability to deliver programs or improve the quality of programs
  • The impact on faculty and staff, how many it will serve, and to what extent the project enhances the faculty/staff career/employment experience
  • The extent to which the project will cause the need to displace program, students, faculty, and staff, including:
    • What surge space will be needed?
    • Please provide a proposed plan for handling this need.
  • Proof that no cost (construction, debt service, operating, etc.) will fall back on the University in the future (Self-funded projects only)
  • The extent to which the project will reduce legal liability related to the health, safety and code issues and/or improve the well being of students, faculty, staff, and the general public
  • The extent to which the project promotes investment in the renewal of existing facilities as an alternative to new construction
  • The extent to which and how the project leverages other improvements in process or planned
  • The extent to which the project improves space utilization
  • The proposed use for vacated space (if any) and the funding it will to make it usable for another program
  • The effect the project will have on operating costs (both facilities and programmatic)
  • The extent to which the project aligns with community and student demographic trends
  • The potential funding sources (for both construction and operating costs)
  • Relative currency of technology being replaced
  • The extent to which replaced equipment is out-of-date/obsolete
  • The extent to which the project plan demonstrates the ability to reduce current and/or anticipated operating costs
